USL2 Game Recap: Reading United AC 1 – 1 Eagle FC
READING, Pa — Reading United AC and Eagle FC shared the points Tuesday night as the sides played to a 1-1 draw in USL League Two action. Reading controlled long stretches of possession and generated the better scoring opportunities but ultimately had to settle for a point after an unfortunate second-half own goal canceled out Santiago Apolaro’s first-half opener.
The visitors nearly found an early breakthrough in a match that featured plenty of midfield battles during the opening minutes. Reading’s first dangerous opportunity came in the eighth minute when Zeke Zambrano delivered a cross to Nick Papadopoulos, but the play was ruled offside.
Reading broke through in the 12th minute from a set piece. Zambrano’s corner kick found the head of Apolaro, who powered his finish into the back of the net to give Reading a 1-0 advantage.
The goal sparked Reading’s attack. Brennan Lamont created danger with a run down the right flank three minutes later before Apolaro and Jake Thomas each tested the Eagle FC defense with shots from distance.
Eagle FC looked for an equalizer through several second-half set pieces, but Reading’s back line consistently dealt with the pressure. The visitors nearly doubled their lead in the closing minutes of the half when Papadopoulos raced in on goal, only to be denied by the goalkeeper charging off his line. Minutes later, Keane Hazeldine narrowly missed the target before Zambrano fired just over the crossbar.
Reading came within inches of extending its lead in the 43rd minute when Papadopoulos struck the post on a counterattack. He nearly found the net again in stoppage time, but his effort drifted just wide as Reading carried its one-goal lead into halftime.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Reading controlling possession while Eagle FC looked to capitalize on limited opportunities. Reading earned an early corner before continuing to dictate the tempo.
The match turned in the 54th minute when an own goal brought Eagle FC level at 1-1 despite Reading’s strong defensive performance to that point.
Reading continued to push for a winner, controlling much of the possession through the middle stages of the half. Papadopoulos forced another save in the 68th minute after a dangerous cross from Zambrano.
The home side continued to create chances late in the match. Zambrano’s effort from the left side was turned away in the 84th minute, and Reading nearly found a winner two minutes later when a corner kick skimmed off a Reading head before being saved by the Eagle FC goalkeeper.
Eagle FC had one final opportunity deep into stoppage time, but its shot sailed over the crossbar as the final whistle confirmed a 1-1 draw.
With the draw, Reading United moves to 4-5-2 on the season with Eagle FC improving to 0-9-2.
With only three games left to play, Reading United AC next faces PA Classics at Spooky Nook Sports Complex on July 5th. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM.
