PLAYER PROFILE: Esteban Suarez Gomez

In celebration of Latin Heritage Night next Wednesday, Reading United is taking the time to recognize the Latin American players who make up the team.

Esteban Suarez Gomez made Pennsylvania a new home for himself after leaving Mexico City to follow his dream of playing soccer.  The Reading United defender is a spring commit to Temple University, where he’ll play in the fall. For the fans to get to know a little bit more about the players they are cheering on, we sat down and talked to them about their heritage, home, and changes they made to play a sport they love.

Where are you from?

I am from Mexico City.

What’s different and similar from your home compared to the US?

The principal difference I see is the weather, before I came to live in the US I had never lived in a place with snow.

Was the move to the US easy or hard & why?

I can say the process was hard. It was long because of all the paperwork I needed to do and kind of a rush because I literally received my visa two days before my classes started.

What do you miss about home?

Obviously my family, my friends and the food.

What’s your favorite thing to do at home?

I enjoy hanging out with my friends, but also stay at home and eat my mom’s food.

Something you would like people to know about your hometown?

I am one of the worst tour guides on the team.

How did you first get into soccer & what was the experience like?

I started playing on my school team when a was a kid and since then I watch or play soccer almost everyday. About my experience I can only tell you good things because through soccer I have met many people and traveled many places that I couldn’t have any other way.

What professional player do you look up to the most?

My favorite player is Antonie Griezmann.

What do you like most about your time in Reading with the team?

I like that I have met many people here in Reading and that in a short amount of time some of them have become really good friends to me.

What do you do in your free time around here?

I usually stay in the apartment when I have free time, but almost every night we play UNO.
