USL2 Game Recap: Reading United AC 1 – 1 LVU Rush

A cool summer evening with scattered rain showers set the scene as Reading United AC faced off with LVU Rush at Alvernia University. This was RUAC’s final match of the season, and they played to a feisty 1-1 draw.

As has been the case in recent matches, RUAC lined up in their traditional 4-3-3 variant. However, RUAC were heavily rotated to face LVU Rush, who opted to line up in a 4-1-2-1-2 variant with high wingbacks and inverted wingers.

In the early goings of the match, RUAC had the majority of the ball and progressed it nicely into the LVU Rush half. Specifically, the combination of winger Kingsley Kanu and fullback Zeke Zambrano proved to be dangerous early on. Twice in the span of five minutes, it was Kanu driving at the defense with Zambrano overlapping him. LVU Rush held their ground well to prevent a goal.

Minutes after those chances by Kanu, RUAC found their breakthrough. LVU Rush were slow to react defensively as Zambrano picked up his head and delivered a floating ball across the field. The pass picked out Isaac Stanley perfectly in stride, who brought the ball down beautifully before striking it on the half volley that snuck into the bottom left corner. Brilliant goal from RUAC. 1-0.

RUAC seemed to be in total control of proceedings in the first fifteen minutes of play. That soon changed, however, in the eighteenth minute, when a scramble in the box found the foot of LVU Rush forward Maksym Komperda, who deftly laid the ball off to midfielder Shane Velez, who struck the ball sweetly into the bottom right corner, leaving RUAC keeper Connor Cresswell rooted to the spot.

RUAC were determined to regain the lead and created a plethora of chances to do so. First, it was a nice run by Mason Booz, who found Keane Hazeldine, who was offside. Soon after, Zambrano found Stanley, who laid the ball off to Booz, whose strike sailed over. Finally, a counterattack led by RUAC’s Nainoa Norton surged right up the heart of LVU Rush’s spine. Norton picked up his head but overhit his pass to Hazeldine. Kanu wanted the ball played to him and showed visible frustration.

The first half was winding down and the match tempo did as well, as sputtered passages of possession occurred in the middle of the park. It was an even encounter so far, and both sides were content to go into the break tied 1-1.

The second half started in favor of the visitors, who garnered a couple of early chances of their own. In the forty-seventh minute, a failed clearance from RUAC found the foot of Velez, who lashed an effort toward goal that sailed wide left. Minutes later, Velez picked his head up and tried to pick out Komperda, who was one on one with the last RUAC defender. The assistant referee called the play offside, to the dismay of the LVU Rush bench.

It took some time for RUAC to find their footing in the second half, but their best chance came in the fifty-ninth minute when Hazeldine’s recycled cross found a wide open Jake Thomas, who headed the ball down but right at LVU Rush goalkeeper Nicholas Willen, who made his first save of the match.

This chance gave RUAC some momentum and in the sixty-fifth minute, fullback Brennen Lamont delivered a line splitting ball through to Stanley, whose cross was tapped home by a wide open Hazeldine. However, before RUAC could celebrate, the flag was raised for offside.

The match was starting to heat up and in the seventy-first minute, the biggest decision thus far would happen. An LVU Rush ball over the top connected with second half substitute Ryan Mundy, who was taken out outside the box by an onrushing Cresswell. The referee was left with an easy decision to brandish the red card for DOGSO, denial of an obvious goal scoring opportunity, as well as excessive force by Cresswell. RUAC had to adjust and removed Booz for backup goalkeeper Mathias Christensen.

Christensen was immediately tested on the inswinging free kick by LVU Rush when a powerful whipped cross by Sebastian Garces was direct on goal and stung the hands of Christensen, who parried the ball up and over for a corner. Minutes later, a long shot by Velez required Christensen to parry the ball over for another corner.

The momentum was now clearly in LVU Rush’s favor, but RUAC had a vital opportunity to regain the lead when a botched corner allowed Kanu to find Stanley one on one up the field. Stanley tried to go around the defender and went down in the box thinking he had won a penalty, but the referee disagreed and told him to play on.

With minutes to play, the man advantage was starting to play a factor in the match. A dangerous cross by substitute Brady Sutton deflected inside the RUAC box but just crept wide.

The referee indicated three minutes of second half stoppage time as LVU Rush remained on the front foot looking for the winner. In the ninety-third minute, the ball popped up for Velez, who struck the ball sweetly on the volley that left Christensen grasping at the air. Luckily for RUAC, the ball rifled off the bar and went out of play. That chance proved to be costly as the referee blew his whistle, ending the match one goal apiece.

This was Reading United’s final match of the 2026 season. A hard-fought season by the 610 saw them finish with eighteen total points. We hope to see you back to cheer on Reading United for the 2027 season!
