USL2 Game Recap: Reading United AC 0 – 2 Ocean City Nor’easters

The latest chapter in one of USL League Two’s longest-running rivalries went the way of the visitors on Wednesday night as Ocean City Nor’easters defeated Reading United AC Men’s 1st Team 2-0 at Alvernia University.

The match marked the 62nd all-time meeting between the clubs, a rivalry that dates back more than 30 years to the days of the Reading Rage and South Jersey Barons. Entering the contest, Reading had gone unbeaten against Ocean City during the 2025 season, but the Nor’easters used a goal in each half to earn tonight’s victory.

Playing its first home match of the 2026 campaign after opening the season with four consecutive road games, Reading came out with energy and nearly created an early breakthrough. The hosts generated a dangerous sequence inside the penalty area in the opening minute before settling into a tightly contested match that saw both teams battle for possession through midfield.

Zeke Zambrano registered Reading’s first shot of the night in the sixth minute, sending an effort just over the crossbar. The two sides continued to trade possession throughout the opening half, with neither team able to consistently connect the final pass in the attacking third.

Ocean City eventually broke through in the 20th minute when Gabriel Faust finished a chance created by Lorenzo Grispello to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

The Nor’easters continued to apply pressure throughout the remainder of the first half, but Reading’s defense stood firm to keep the deficit at a single goal heading into halftime.

The second half featured a more open contest as Reading searched for an equalizer. Zambrano delivered a dangerous cross into the box in the 58th minute, but the hosts were unable to find the finishing touch. Following a series of substitutions midway through the half, the match settled into a physical battle in the midfield.

Reading nearly found its breakthrough in the 73rd minute when Emil Nymar Anderson unleashed a shot from distance that narrowly missed the target.

Instead, Ocean City doubled its advantage in the 80th minute. Lucas Foreman collected the ball on the left side and curled a well-placed finish into the far corner to make it 2-0.

The hosts nearly answered five minutes later. Nick Papadoupolis struck a shot that beat the goalkeeper but rattled off the post, denying Reading what would have been a deserved lifeline in the closing stages.

Reading continued to push forward through three minutes of stoppage time, but Ocean City held firm to secure the 2-0 victory.

The loss drops Reading United to 1-4-0 on the season. The two longtime rivals will meet again on June 20 at Carey Stadium, where another chapter will be written in a series that has produced more than 60 meetings and remains one of the most storied rivalries in USL League Two.

Reading United next faces West Chester United SC on Saturday night when it hosts Alvernia University. Kick off is set for 7:00 PM.
